Rotary Provides a Much-Needed Example of Solid Integrity, International Cooperation, and the Spirit of Volunteerism

William B. (Bill) Boyd, President, Rotary International, 2006-07

    Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Rotary is so much more than the sum of its parts. Every program of Rotary — the club and district activities, the scholarships and exchanges, and the vast and varied humanitarian projects — serves a different purpose. No two clubs anywhere are exactly alike, and it is this diversity that is our strength.

Together, we show the world that a better future is possible anywhere and everywhere and that generosity of spirit, tolerance for differences, and high moral values are not obstacles to success but the path to success.

In a world full of ethical challenges, where cooperation among countries and tolerance of differences is so vital to peace, Rotary provides a much-needed example of solid integrity, international cooperation, and the spirit of volunteerism.

A progress report from RI's PolioPlus chair

A progress report from RI's PolioPlus chair, 24 March 2005/br

What is the current outlook for polio eradication? It still looks good — despite some unexpected setbacks in Africa. India saw only about 100 cases in 2004, compared to nearly 2,000 in 2002. We are now conducting coordinated NIDs [National Immunization Days] in West and Central Africa, and political opposition has been substantially halted.

Two projects were launched on Tuesday 8 June, 2004, at the IVTB House, Phoenix, namely Exchange Programme between Visitation RCA School and Beaumaris Primary School, Perth, Western Australia and donation of books to primary schools.

The Exchange project follows the visit of President Om Varma to Perth. Since children in the Australian school study French as a foreign language, it was proposed to establish an exchange with a school in Mauritius. This project consists essentially of Mauritian Children writing postcards to their peers in Australia. Two classes participated from Visitation RCA under the Headship of Mr. Sydney Das. The teachers report that the students are so enthusiastic about this that even the lower achieving ones have got motivated into participating and writing postcards. This has had a very positive impact on the motivation of students and testifies to the fact that children want variety and creativity as part of their daily school work. The Rotary Club of Vacoas has produced a video CD showing the students reading their post cards and talking to the Australian Children about their country. This video is being sent to Australia along with the postcards.

Osaka convention makes history, ushers in centennial fervor

    By Dean Golemis Rotary International

The 95th Rotary International Convention in Osaka, Japan, not only went down in the books for its record-breaking attendance figures, but it is also notable for doing so just one year before Rotary's highly anticipated 2005 centennial convention in Chicago is expected to do the same.

With 45,595 paid registrants from 112 countries, the Osaka gathering easily toppled the record that was last set in 1978, again in Japan, where the Tokyo convention drew 39,834 faithful.
