Rotary wants Clubs worldwide to demonstrate support for Rotary's End Polio Now campaign and promote Rotary in their community by planning an event around World Polio Day, 24 October. We did it and it worked wonderfully well. Members and their relatives and friends gathered to spend an evening of fund raising through a Bingo Night.

The Rotary Awareness Night held on 30 Aug 2011 was an opportunity to invite economic operators, Rotarian's friends and business collaborators to the Club.

PDG Randhir presented Rotary and spoke on the roles, function and ideals of a Rotary Club as well as the Rotary International, as he traced the History of the RI. It was equally an opportunity to allow the guests who were not familiar with Rotary to obtain an insight into one of the foremost Service Club in the world today.

PP Jeewan Jepaul, Director for Projects, presented a retrospective on the projects undertaken by the Club since its inception in 1991 and highlighted the projects planned for 2011-2011.

The crux of the evening was the induction of three new members: Rtn Shah Soodeen , Rtn  Alvin Joyekurun, Rtn  Pravesh Doorgakant.

One of the major projects undertaken by the Club during 2010-11 was the extension of the Radiotherapy Unit of the Victoria Hospital, Candos, Quatre-Bornes. About 200 cancer patients visit this unit daily, but it had accommodation for only about 75 patients. The Club was apprised of the situation in 2009 and ever since it embarked in a fun raising project under the chairmanship of then Project Director, PP Jugdis Bundhoo. The funds collected were to serve to purchase motorised wheel chairs for the Muscular Dystrophy patients as well as cater for financing of the extension project of the Radiotherapy Unit.

Vocational Award

To celebrate the Vocational Month, The Club engaged in another project- The Vocational Award has been instituted to recognize professional who have distinguished themselves in the field of public service. This year the Club honoured the Staff of the Radiotherapy Department of the Candos Hospital, the biggest hospital in the island. The Club is involved in a major project for the Radiotherapy department, the extension of the Outpatient Department to the tune of about One million rupees that is almost in its completion phase. This project gave us the opportunity to asses and understand the contribution of this department and to come to the decision of honouring the staff members. Health care being free in Mauritius, there seems to be a lot of expectations and demands on the hospital service which very few people are really aware of. Recognising the hospital staff is a way of expressing our gratitude as civil society for the contribution of highly committed professionals that often goes unnoticed. The Award giving ceremony was attended by the Health and Quality of life Minister, Honourable Jeetah who personally thanked the Club for its initiative.
