Proceeds from the Charity Walk will be used to buy electric chairs for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). What is the MDA? Founded in 2003, the MDA is a voluntary non-profit organization that gives support to patients and their parents who are dealing with the situation largely in isolation. They do not have the necessary coping mechanism, thus allowing the disease to follow its most severe course, and leaving the patients with a very poor quality of life.
Funds raised from the charity walk will also be used for the extension of outpatient department waiting area of the Radiotherapy (Oncology) Department at Victoria Hospital, Candos. The outpatient Department of the Radiotherapy Department is already too small. The Rotary Club of Vacoas wishes to undertake a project to construct an extension to the existing waiting area.
The club is coming to the support to needy children of Henrietta Government School. They will also benefit from this charity walk. There are few families who are not able to provide the best facilities for their children, even when there is free education and transport. They need more support and constant follow up without which the children may be condemned to reproduce a cycle of deprivation. The club is sponsorship of about 30 children throughout their school career. This project was launched on Wednesday 6 June.
It is interesting to end with the words of RI President-elect Wilfrid J. Wilkinson (2007-2008) which states what Rotary is all about: "What makes Rotary great is our expressing the love in our hearts through the work of our hands and our minds," said Wilkinson. "As Rotarians, we don’t just sit back and talk about loving other human beings. As Rotarians, we demonstrate that love, and we share that love, through helping each other."
